ARRIVAL

Upon arrival, you will need to register at reception and if it is your first visit here, open a file. You will need to bring with you a valid insurance card, as well as a medical prescription signed by your treating physician, containing your medical information (if it has not already been sent via Fax or internet). You are required to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment

THE TEST

Our staff will accompany you to the pertinent area. You will be asked to complete a pre-review medical questionnaire. If necessary, you may need to remove some clothing and put on a jacket. Metal objects must be removed before entering the room containing the magnets. You usually will be lying on your back with a pillow under your knees for comfort. The unit is a bit noisy and earplugs will be provided always, in order to ensure your comfort. You will also have in your possession a bell to enable you to communicate at all times with the technologist located immediately outside the examination room. Constant monitoring is ensured by our staff during image acquisition. Some tests require the injection of a different contrast to that of a computed tomography, such as gadolinium. Allergy problems with gadolinium are much rarer than allergies to iodine, but they do exist on occasion. Kidney function problems are much less important than with computed tomography, but in certain cases they must also be considered. All this will be checked when making the appointment and during the completion of the medical questionnaire beforehand.

DURATION

The test takes between 20 to 60 minutes. Allow for an additional 30 minutes at the clinic.

6. Description

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the latest modality, and in many cases (but not all), the most powerful investigative tool in the radiological armada. Its physical bases are all at completely different from general radiography or ultrasound. It images hydrogen atoms present in the human body, at the level of water molecules (H²O).

The resulting pictures provide exceptional contrast density, which is especially useful in the investigation of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Several other applications are constantly being developed, so we need to remain on the lookout for these new products. For further details, the Wikipedia website will inform you further.
